He came to work with a positive, upbeat attitude, and he was very courteous. There is something to be said for a young person to use 'ma'am' and 'sir' when socializing with people. He was eager to practice his technique during his breaks." At RJ Mechanical, Nick Dillard, a Pelham High School student, helped with multiple tasks during his internship, including welding pre-fab fittings in the piping fabrication shop and helping build duct in the sheet metal fabrication shop. "We believe that field experience is just as valuable as the classroom environment," said Chris Macon, RJ Mechanical's job coordinator. "In the field is where you actually get to put what you've learned to use. It helps create problem- solving skills that you can only develop in a real-world environment. BL Harbert welcomed two ACT students, Richard McManus and Thomas Wade, who performed a variety of jobs on their job sites. They helped build temporary wood framed doors and temporary window frames, dismantled temporary stairs, removed water from floors and provided other general cleanup. "They did well for such a short time with us," said BL Harbert Project Superintendent Lynn Spradlin. While supervisors at each company were quick to note the positive attitude and work ethic of student interns, the students were also quick to point out how much they learned in just two weeks getting hands-on experience at their respective companies. Brett Brooks, a Vestavia Hills High School student who interned at Robins & Morton, was proud to get experience in the field. "They showed me how to be a great apprentice and how to find a better and easier way to do almost anything on the job site," he said. "I learned a lot of skills that I'm sure will help me when I leave the Academy and join the workforce. I enjoyed my experience and I'm very glad they allowed me to intern with them." Kyler Ogden, a Pell City High School student who interned at Goodgame Company, got his first-ever opportunity to — Peyton Cofer, Interned at Goodgame Company — Michael Potts, Interned at Goodgame Company "I gained on the job experience, I made connections that will serve me well in the future and I got to learn what it's like to be on the job….This opportunity was one of the best." "I learned a lot about running conduit and how to bend the conduit and tips on bending it…I thank Goodgame Company for allowing us to work with them."
