The company has recently achieved Ruby Sponsorship status. "We don't want it to be a burden to our employees," Arledge said. "And we work with employees to see that it's not a 'one and done' type of process. It's professional development, a building block that helps our team of supervisors reach their full potential. That's something our industry struggles with: we hire people and they come with a set of professional skills and we expect those skills to perform to our standard. In order for this to happen consistently, we must continually invest in them so that these skills are refined." Eldeco's goal is to have 100 percent of its supervisors, superintendents and project managers, a group that totals more than 100 people, to be trained and certified. Once those groups are certified, company leaders are hoping to offer the certification to other levels of employees. Thus far, approximately 23 Eldeco employees are certified, with another 24 enrolled to take the exam. "So far what we've seen is that our supervisors see the bigger picture when it comes to their responsibility for safety," said Eldeco Vice President Leland Busby. "This program has helped our employees understand not only moral but also legal responsibility, as well as being a responsible supervisor. The program opens their eyes and makes them feel accountable for what is happening on their job sites." While many companies focus on lag time indicators, Eldeco has a vision for where they want to be when it comes to the safe execution of projects. This partnership with BCSP highlights that path and the vision Eldeco has for their "greatest asset," their employees. "Anyone can look back and say what you have done," Arledge said. "We want the message to our clients to be about where we are going and the path we are on to achieve safety excellence."
