SINCE NOVEMBER 2016, THE INDUSTRY'S FUTURE LEADERS have been learning about how to become better leaders through Future Leaders in Construction (FLIC). The multi-day event—now in its 12th year—brings together young professionals for strategically-focused sessions that help them learn how to take the necessary steps to achieve personal and professional growth. FMI Principal James C. Schug leads each session. Schug specializes in helping companies improve their businesses by applying practical experience and an in-depth understanding of lasting behavioral change. New this year is the addition of Future Business Leaders, which is offered to FLIC alumni. This upper-level course picks up where FLIC left off, refreshing the up-and-comers' knowledge and abilities to lead organizations effectively. "The market is full of disruption today, colliding with our businesses, our families and even our health," said Schug. "Some companies are trying to apply 'the way' they always have done things to this new environment and in some cases, they are unaware of the impact on their profits and people. Rather than building an adaptable culture, the blame shifts to 'the customers,' 'the competition' or 'the millennials'. Leading an organization effectively is mostly about change. Some firms are trying hard to inspire change with corporate policy, motivate innovation with incentives and change culture with technology. The attendees at FLIC (or FBL) will learn what best in class leaders and companies are doing to lead during this difficult period. Applying these concepts, they will be more able to reach personal success and effectively lead the people in their organization while accomplishing great results." Both courses will wrap in April 2017. Stay tuned for more information about this year's class.
