CONSTRUCTION A L A B A M A N E W S 6 AL CONSTRUCTION NEWS JAN-MAR 2018 "I'D RATHER BE WORKING." YES, I KNOW, IT SHOULD READ "I'D RATHER BE FISHING." I like fishing and hunting, and one day soon it will come to that. For the moment, your association is very busy and requires a lot of hours for me to have the privilege of doing my part. Folks, it is the work we do that makes it a labor of love. Our industry needs an engaged, informed, high energy group of professionals representing us at local, state and federal levels. That's what your ABC does. That includes any type of legislative issue that can affect us: groups that try and impose burdensome, unnecessary requirements on us; oversight on employee safety so that with our input legislation is handled effectively; continual collaboration with elected officials so they know clearly the pulse of the ABC and can depend on our advice and counsel. Governmental affairs is important. How many organizations in this state have the drive/expertise to develop a craft training program from scratch, receiving cooperation/collaboration with the State Department of Education and the Department of Commerce, open with 90 students, recruit five teachers for five trades, reach into their own pockets to fund it, graduate 34 students the first year with members employing them, and do it well enough that state funding is recommended by the Department of Education and Governor? That's what your ABC does. Not important we do it quickly; important we do it well. And oh, the success stories of our Academy of Craft Training graduates. Our students are on fire! Our ABC pushes quality and excellence. Our annual Excellence in Construction Banquet garnered over 650 construction professionals, spouses and guests last year. It's the dandiest networking event on the planet, and plans for this November spectacular will blow you away. Networking ? Yes! This year our mantra is for more members to have more opportunities to meet other trades and individuals and further business development. That's what your ABC does. None of what we do matters if our people don't return home safely every day. It is our privilege to report that every year our industry is safer. Knowing the risks of our profession, your ABC recognizes those companies and individuals that hold serious JSAs, provide regular training classes on safety and provide a designated safety superintendent on projects. Our Safe Day is the largest association event of its kind in our dear state. That's what your ABC does. Too many good things, not enough time. Your association has an annual "to die for" convention with quality content, networking opportunities, receptions and more fun and food than a fiesta in Madrid on Saturday night! This year at The Pearl in Walton County, Florida. Platinum Partners ---- ten top state businesses that support us in everything we do, inestimably precious to your ABC. Our Alabama Construction News, arguably the best construction publication in the state, is a must read. Our members have access to Penn National for contractor's general liability package at exceptional rates. And more. Any worthy association continues to grow its family. Whether a contractor, subcontractor, supplier or associate in our world, we want you to be a part of something that is bigger than the individual. Something positive. Something supremely special. Our family is strong, credible, like- minded and here to stay. We invite those wanting to excel to join us and make our family stronger. And next year, I'm going fishing…… 6 Publisher JAY REED Associate Publisher/ Managing Editor TODD WALKER Publishing Coordinator/Circulation CHARLES HALL Accounting JENNY WILSON Advertising Sales GEORGE PIERCE Writer PAIGE TOWNLEY Print Production ALLIANCE PUBLISHING GROUP Art Direction KRISTEN BAILEY ALABAMA CONSTRUCTION NEWS is published by Associated Builders & Contractors, Inc.
