8 AL CONSTRUCTION NEWS JAN-MAR 2018 BUILDING ALABAMA | PROJECTS ABC OF ALABAMA MEMBER FRAVERT SERVICES HELPED THE ALABAMA THEATRE MAKE A HISTORIC ADDITION TO ITS FACILITY JUST IN TIME FOR THE NEW YEAR. Fravert was selected to construct the Alabama Theatre's new 18th Street sign, which had to be built to match the historic original on 3rd Avenue. The original sign is believed to have been taken down somewhere around 1957 and never put back up. Fravert was able to construct an exact replica, which measures approximately 60 feet tall and 12 feet wide. Fravert did make use of more modern technology, however, in the new sign. For example, instead of using steel, they utilized aluminum. Instead of using neon bulbs, they went with LED lights, which saves energy and reduces power consumption. In fact, said Beene, the new sign uses 90 percent less power than the older one. "For us as a company, it's really amazing to have been part of a project like that," said Fravert Services President Craig Fravert. "Everyone who worked on the project took pride in knowing that they were working on something that would become part of a Birmingham landmark. It's exciting for us to be a part of something that should still be here 100 years from now." The new sign completes the exterior renovation of the Theatre, and it coincides with the iconic venue's 90th birthday, and it was lit at the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve to ring in 2018. "The Alabama sign is probably one of the most iconic signs in our state," said Brant Beene, president of Birmingham Landmarks, the company that operates the Theatre. " We are so proud to have the sign back up like it was when the structure was built all those years ago. We're also very lucky to have such a great company as Fravert doing the work and the financial donors who helped raise the needed funds." Fravert Services Puts its Mark on Downtown Attraction
